HYBRID PUBLISHING

Empowering writers.

A blend of self publishing and traditional publishing.

Self publishing: the writer pays for and is responsible for everything.

Traditional publishing: the publisher handles it all (except for marketing).

Hybrid publishing: the writer covers many costs, but the publisher acts as a guide and takes on almost all responsibilities—from editing and proofreading to copyrighting and distribution.

WHICH MODEL IS RIGHT FOR ME?

This decision's largely personal.  Each model has pros and cons.  Also, not every model is available to everyone.  (You can really want to be traditionally published, but that doesn’t mean you will be.)

Take the quiz below to help you determine which model might be right for you.

  • Make your erudite writing actually interesting to read.

WHAT WE'RE GOOD AT (AND NOT)

We wish we could say we were good at everything, but . . . well . . . reality.

GOOD

  • keeping writers’ best interest in mind

  • creating beautiful books

  • getting books out into the world

  • communicating

  • taking our time to ensure quality

  • putting together fun and well-attended book launches

  • making sure your book gets into the hands of your friends, loved ones, and a little beyond

NOT GOOD

  • focusing only on the bottom line

  • publishing anything that comes our way

  • stalling on publication

  • operating in secrecy

  • rush jobs

  • massive distribution

PRICING

Many variables go into pricing a book publication, so it's difficult to give flat prices.  The two biggest costs are editing hours and printing cost.  So the two biggest factors affecting publishing cost are the quality of the manuscript and its length: quality affects editing hours, and length affects both editing hours and print cost.

Full publishing—from editing to proofreading to layout to distribution—can run from ~$1,000 for a poetry chapbook to well over $5,000 for a 400-page novel that needs a lot of work.
